Finding a professional, trustworthy, experienced, and honest roofing contractor is not an easy task. You must make sure that you are hiring a reputable service provider and your home is in safe hands. Let’s have a look at six tips that will help you choose the right roofing contractor.
1. Select a local roofing contractor
Local service providers are often more aware with the local regulations and rules and also have good relationships with the local suppliers. Therefore, it is best to choose a local roofing contractor so that there are fewer chances of scams and problems.
2. Hire a BBB accredited contractor
Your roofing contractor should be accredited with BBB (Better Business Bureau). Such contractors have to maintain a set standard that is set by Better Business Bureau; otherwise they will lose their certification. BBB contractors give priority to customer satisfaction.
3. Look for the extensive warranty
Only a few service providers offer long term warranty. It must be kept in mind that improper installation of roofing usually gets destroy after few months. You won’t be able to claim the damage if your roofing contractor does not offer extended warranty. Try to choose a roofing company that offers extensive warranty on workmanship. Furthermore, you should also investigate the warranty of materials that are used in your roofing project. In this way, you can make sure that high quality materials are used by your roofing contractor.
4. Workers should be well trained
Safety of property as well as the workers plays an important role when it comes to roofing projects. Roofing contractors should be well aware with this fact and also provide proper safety training to their personnel. A well trained roofing team is capable of installing roofs with due diligence and care. They know how to install a roof without damaging the property or their self. Most of the states in U.S. have made it mandatory to get licensing and safety certification for roofing contractors.
5. Choose a contractor that offers insurance coverage
A reliable contractor is the one that is capable of handling the insurance claim for its clients. In this way, clients can avail the benefit of premiums that they are paying to their insurance companies. The process of paying premiums can become much easy and inexpensive when your roofing contractor is supportive. Your contractor should also provide sufficient insurance coverage for protecting you from any obligation in the unforeseen event.
6. Determine the quality of materials
Identify the quality of roofing materials that are being used by your roofing contractor. The best roofing contractor is the one that gives you the opportunity to select the roofing material as per your choice. 1ST- Did you know? Asphalt shingles takes 300 YEARS to break down? Now That I have your attention....Read on...Reason's why choosing asphalt might not be a great idea....Not environmentally friendly at all....Still it can be a perfectly good material to work with, however, not disposed of correctly ....Well, that can be a problem....Read on my friend and watch the video below after.
With all of the roof Replacements going on in the San Antonio area, we have seen a number of different ways that unscrupulous roofing contractors have been trying to cut the costs.
Unfortunately this short video that I took came from the Timber-wood area just earlier this week. These people have decided to use there front lawn as a asphalt roofing dump.
I was quickly reminded while sometimes we are not always the cheapest estimate that you will receive it's because we do things right.
Looking at how some people choose to dispose of shingles is shameful to the state and the people that live here. One of the ways that these get rich quick roofing companies do is come in scrape your roof and dump it wherever they can find. If these people that are willing to poison the ground that they live on or even their neighbor for nothing what do you think the quality and workmanship of their work it is?
It's important that if you need to save money you need to understand where you're saving the money from. Are they hiring unskilled labor? Are they short cutting materials? Where is it that you're losing value?
The adage that has been said so many times has been known around the world you get what you pay for.
The bottom line is we are definitely not the cheapest. However we are ones that strive to do it correctly. Its shameful to see locals doing this type of thing to our ground and we hope by drawing attention to this that it stops the problem.
Okay here I go!....... I hope I don't get sued but I'm about to share information with you and obviously I'm naming names.
Look, in the world of insurance, it is like splitting atoms, the complicated formulas and mathematical tables that they send to you are enough to send any reasonable person's head spinning and smoking.....
It's meant to overwhelm you.....Its designed for the sheepel of this world...Come on IPhone apps have many complicated technical task as easy as putting bread in a toaster.
You tell me..Your smart enough to be reading this blog and arming yourself with some real knowledge. Connect the dots.
Okay look I'm in the roofing industry and each and every one of these insurance carriers have a different way of labeling things confusing enough for someone that does this 80 hours a week.
And the DIRTY truth is the FAT cat insurance companies they know that you don't know anything about what they can do to you.....
Okay so what does it mean to be pitch slapped?
The truth is this what you don't know about your insurance claim is going to hurt you.
In the insurance World there something called a steep charge. Steep charges are applied to roofs that have a higher than normal pitch. I don't want to get into all the boring details of it. Because you can go to Google and read up everything you need to read about. The point of this blog is to expose you to the idea that there's probably information that you haven't even considered or consumed yet.
Here's what you need to know.
Recently a client of mine came to me that had State Farm as their insurance carrier. This particular insurance carrier has in my opinion had a somewhat checkered past. In this particular case this client of mine had a very incomplete insurance quote from the adjuster that came out to look at the house. Missing several things....Another story for another day. Consume and digest this first.
Why is important to have the right pitch documented?
The very important truth of making sure that your roof has been documented as to having the correct pitch means the difference in potentially several hundreds or even thousands of dollars that end up being applied towards your roof not just in labor but in materials as well. Roofing crews demand a premium for higher pitched roofs. Time, effort and energy all add up....
Okay so here's the real dirty truth of why it's very important that you make sure that you didn't just get pitch slapped.
If you have a roof that is something you would consider walk-able, meaning you could get up there and walk around on it very easily. It's probably not an issue.
However if you have a roof that has a pitch that would somewhat scared the s*** out of you to be on you need to make sure that you have been paid the right amount of money.
If you're not paid the right amount of money and your roofer comes to put that roof on, best case scenario you're talking about a longer delay in getting your roof put on.
And here's a scary thing this is probably only the tip of the iceberg. And what do they say about icebergs? You can only see 10% of the iceberg 90% is below the waterline.
Okay I get it maybe you're new to this whole buying a roof thing.
Maybe you're someone that's out there trying to figure it out and make sense of it all. Check this out..... it's an application you can download to your smartphone called pitch gauge.
You literally Point your smart phone at the house and it will tell you exactly what the pitch of your home it is. Once you've done this go back and look specifically at your insurance paperwork.....
Ripple effect is this, if you do not have the right pitch you will not have the right amount of material to cover your roof.
When it comes to understanding why things like this happen it's because under experienced adjusters go out in a rush and don't take the proper time. In this particular case my client had State Farm as their insurance carrier.
Now I again want to say I have had experiences with State Farm that have been checkered. Good ones and of course bad ones. I know insurance companies like State Farm can't be the great guy every single day some people do try and take advantage of them....BUT for the other 99% of us COME ON!
Remember Friends at the end of the day this is a business. Insurance companies are some of the wealthiest companies in the world! I'm not advocating taking advantage of them because they make a lot of money.
We need insurance companies. However I am advocating excellence in customer service and taking care of customers in the way that they should be as they are insured.
If you have experienced some of these same problems with your insurance company, reach out to me personally and I will be happy to look at your paperwork and work through any issues that I can for you.
As a professional roofing contractor every single day we deal with issues that the normal home buyer doesn't deal with on a regular basis. Often leaving the home buyer with the damaged property and somewhat of a disadvantage due to their lack of experience in dealing with issues relating property loss and damage.
It is imperative to me that I communicate with my customer each step of the way as to what expectations they should have when it comes to dealing with insurance companies. Austin insurance companies are stretched very thin when it comes to staff and cases that they are dealing with, and then if you had a major catastrophe like the hail storm that hit her in the San Antonio area not once but twice it makes even longer lines for help twice as long.
Setting good expectations with my homeowner's about time frames and how to deal with insurance companies has helped alleviate some of the stress that comes with major purchases like Roofing. One of the common mistakes that I see quite often is a number of people Gathering 3 quotes from 3 different companies. Intellectually this completely makes.
However, when it comes to insurance companies these prices are typically underpaid by 10 or even 25% right here in the San Antonio area. Now the reasons why. Number one we had an estimated 285,000 to 350,000 homes businesses affected by that storm. Take that in mind. This is what happened everyone called their insurance company and ask agent to come out and inspect their roof.
Well imagine that not enough inspectors trained to do that job. So what happens contract inspectors and contract Agents from all over the country descended here upon San Antonio. Some good some bad. It's just like anything else you have different levels of professionalism and some of them are better trained than others.
Take that into mind that they are now doing 9 and in some cases 10 inspection today in San Antonio Heat. Add travel time and documentation and these people were working 16-hour days. There are a lot of factors that you had no control when it came to the response from your insurance company.
Here's what you do to control have someone like us take a look at your insurance make sure that you were paid out correctly. I've literally had neighbors across the street have there roof bought-and-paid-for while the neighbor on the other side of the street get $68 for a couple of broken screens.
Its important just like having in attorney that you have someone that represents you and is extremely knowledgeable about what you are and I hate to say this word in title to. The bottom line is you bought insurance to protect your home and property make sure you are getting the value for what you have already paid for.
This is how I like to communicate with a home owner...You got to love video...Roofing inspection found damage we made repairs right then.
Wow, its been pretty hot here in San An the last few days and thinking about rain seem like a giant welcome. I jumped in the pool a few times this last week and it was great.....So back to rain....Not going to happen anytime soon said one of the little piggy's....I will huff and I will puff and I will blow your house....I think I might have the wrong story but a great point....
The rain is coming and just because you don't think you have a problem does not mean you do. This last week I was again reminded what I don these roof inspections for free. So many people turn down a free roof inspection that have real roof damage and don't know or care. Ones that could be paid for by the insurance company and should. Long story short if we charged NO one would be interested in getting there roof looked at.
You might just need a small patch job or a little tune up, and that is not a problem we can do that and even give you advice if you can not afford to have someone do the job. But give us a call and let us try to help you.
Check out the txt I got a few days ago. I hope you can give me a txt just like that one some day as well. Here is my cell just in case you want to get started today 210-624-7450.
Recently I received a telephone call from a prospective customer about a leak that they were having in the roof. After taking several of these calls I realized
that I needed to get out and pass out information so people can be armed with some knowledge before they call.
The truth is by the time you are experiencing a week in your home that is visible to you from your roof. This is now a problem that is much more than you probably anticipated. With the recent hail damage that's happened in San Antonio you're going to be getting more and more of these types of phone calls from people with similar problems. Of course depending on the direction that the damage affected your home and severity at the size of hail that hit will greatly determine the time frame in which you start experiencing these problems. With the recent dry weather I'm sure many of us believe they were out of the woods so to speak. Consider this, a roof tune-up is something that should be in your near future. This is something that many companies to offer its what you're getting for your money. For our company we will come out and do it depending on the style of that you have the cost is very. For instance and asphalt 3 tab shingle roof is typically around 175 to $200 depending on the material. Typically this type of tuna can stop a potential week maybe even too. However this is only a temporary solution for a much larger fix that needs to happen somewhere down the road. Metal roofs are a bit different and priced differently depending on the severity of damage in type of metal. However, the bottom line is this with the recent damage that has happened it's important that you understand there could be things that pop up like this from time to time. Be on the lookout for potential leaks in corners of your home. Recently I have discovered more leaking in the corners of people's homes that they could not see. Make sure you take the time to grab a flashlight and spot check the corners of every room in your home. Low-lying areas essentially where water could flow down are areas where these tea stains could accumulate on your drywall. Do it yourself is very popular nowadays. However when it comes to dealing with your roof and keeping a roof over your family's head, there is only so much you should be willing to take on. One of the things that I have learned to be true in businesses I stay within the Wheelhouse of my expertise. Often I've decided to try to save money in the past and it usually ends up costing me more. If you're looking for a partner in Roofing or considering that you might need a roof inspection, we are the ideal partner for you. We truly understand the problems in Roofing and the collateral damage that could happen as a result. Aside from that we truly understand the insurance process and how to get people paid correctly. Insurance is a business, not your friend. They are a service that we all purchase every single day. In the end getting paid out correctly for the premiums that we have paid is the most important thing. When frustrating things like this happen in life it's important that you understand what your rights are and what to look for. When you do not arm yourself with good information you only open yourself up to risk for getting taken advantage of by these big fat cat insurance companies. It's important to me and my customers for them to understand that when we go into a job are your advocacy. If you need a no hassle free estimate contact me personally or posted this blog and I would be happy to help you
